On 6 April 2009 at 3:32, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit the city of L'Aquila, and caused a change in the lives of people in the Abruzzo region,Italy. The earthquake affected 230 square metres in L'Aquila, destroying 15,000 buildings in the medevial city and killed more than 200 people and injured 1500 people.Agostino Miozzo, an official of the civil protection department of Italy, said that they would have to get several thousand people to assist and help over the next few weeks and even months. Their goal is to give shelter to all the people by that night. We could minimize damage of such an event by preparing for it.We should secure our belongings and on file cabinets and cabinet doors put latches on them to prevent them from opening and spilling out anything they contain inside. Also, we can fasten our appliances including our water heater. Anchor them to the floor or wall to prevent sliding or falling of the appliances.Hazardous materials should be stored in a sturdy place. This will prevent them from spilling out and causing harm.
Keep fire extinguishers as they may be needed in the earthquake when there is fire.
